Long answer: The look of the photo is in a style that's popular now simulating so-called "tilt-shift photography." Tilt-shift lenses pivot and rotate in relation to the film plane to achieve optical effects like making the lines of a tall building parallel when shooting from a low angle, or artificially reducing the depth of field. Since macro photography has an extremely shallow depth of field, using a tilt-shift lens on a large scene makes it appear to be a miniature. The depth-of-field effect can also be achieved with Photoshop or other digital post processes. The short answer, though, is that this photo was taken from the above ground subway looking down at the street with a camera that has a tilt shift preset that blurs the edges of the frame and saturates the colors automatically. It's a shortcut I know, but I love the effect too.

Christopher - is that a photograph of a set of miniatures? It almost looks like a still from Mr. Rodgers neighborhood. How did you get that effect?

Ann, yes, that's a sunset. The mountains there look similar to the hills here but bigger. And covered with lush, green vegetation.

I actually have the book you refer to in your link. It has a lot of narrative and several historical photos but not much in the way of "then and now" comparison photos. And, except for the cover, all the photos are black and white. It's nice to see colorful images on blogs like yours.

Great to hear from you!! And thanks!

I did some then-and-now photos of Monroeville for a project in high school, and a similar documentary on Route 22 for my senior thesis in college.

A book that Marilyn Chandler published in 1988 called Monroeville: Hamlet to Highways has a lot of then-and-now pictures. It's long out of print, but there are a few other recent books out there like this one. (I don't know how good it is, as I haven't read it).

I enjoy seeing and reading your photos and posts of Pasadena and environs. Perhaps someone should do the same for the Monroeville area. Your Crazybridge work is phenomenal-I hadn't realized until a couple years ago (when you were nominated for an Emmy) that a lot of what I watched on History and such was largely a product of your talent. Been meaning to write, but..a little slow. Great work, Chris.

I was so happy you two could make it! "Rumor Has It" is worth seeing just for the City Hall courtyard scene at night. This was the final film production at Pasadena City Hall before we closed for the three-year retrofit. The production crew worked on the set design for three or four days before they did the shooting. The scene took place in San Francisco, but there's no mistaking the actual location! I must say it was stunning.
